Iquitos is a contradiction within itself. A city in the middle of the jungle accessible only by air or river; a surprisingly large metropolis filled with noisy moto-taxis. Apart from an incredible Amazonic museum, the city centre itself is uneventful and as we were reluctant to explore the infamous nightlife, the Belen market and the floating slum is where our curiosity was drawn.

As we explored deeper into the market I began to feel a little vulnerable and appreciated the fast pace we maintained, until suddenly we came out into the sunlight and made our way down huge concrete stairs towards the river.
Naked children ran amongst excrement and food was served only inches from the filthy ground; despite the setting everyone we passed greeted us with disarming warmth, delighted by the sight of these obviously foreign tourists.
As the water got closer the amount of rubbish increased and it now greeted us floating in the water, a dead baby kitten alongside all of the trash of daily life.
